A Democratic hero died last night.

Thu Mar 13, 2008 at 06:53:11 AM PDT

Howard Metzenbaum died in Florida (h/t Davybaby) last night.  Metzenbaum, senator from Ohio, a true liberal and hero of working people and consumers everywhere, was the kind of senator who put his love of country and its citizens above any personal agenda.

It was diaried last night by Davybaby but didn't get much attention. Senator Metzenbaum deserves our profound gratitude and respect.

Winning as a liberal

Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 10:54:02 AM PDT

There is no state like Ohio, the epitome of midwestern "moderate", "centrist", and "swing" in this country. Bush won it by a sliver in 2004, giving him his narrow victory margin that year. Indeed, bucking CW that said a "liberal Democrat" couldn't win such a state, then-Rep. Sherrod Brown set out to prove them all wrong.

And he would do so by running as an unabashed progressive populist. Check this out from early January 2006:

Most of the Democratic candidates in the handful of red and purple-state races that figure to dictate control of the U.S. Senate this fall have embraced the "centrist" label and platform; some, such as Pennsylvania's Bob Casey, boast conservative stances on abortion or other social issues.

Mr. Brown carries a more populist - Republicans derisively say "liberal" - banner in his Ohio battle with GOP incumbent Mike DeWine. He wants troops out of Iraq this year. He denounces America's free trade pacts. He criticizes Mr. DeWine's votes to repeal the estate tax and make some of President Bush's tax cuts permanent.

When Republicans rip his votes against certain military or intelligence spending, or his opposition to a federal constitutional same-sex marriage ban, Mr. Brown dismisses them with a "yeah, so?" shrug.

People chuckled at the strategy.

Mr. DeWine has largely ignored his opponent so far, but other Republicans pummel Mr. Brown almost daily with allegations of running left of the state's voters. "I'll give him credit for staying true to who he is," said John McClelland, a state GOP spokesman, "but it's not going to win him an election in Ohio."

Heck, many of our own fell for that trap, arguing that only Paul Hackett could win the general since Brown was "too liberal for Ohio". Yet ten months later, Brown beat the "moderate" incumbent Mike DeWine -- a Republican not scandal tainted -- by a whopping 12-point margin, 56-44.

Is this a template for the whole country? Every region and every state is different. There isn't a one-size fits all solution for every race. But if nothing else, we can hope our national party leaders realize that being a "liberal" isn't an electoral kiss of death, to be avoided at all costs. In fact, it may provide exactly the sort of contrasts voters crave in an era of extreme disillusionment with Republican governance and Democratic ineffectiveness.

Given the rise of Brown-style populism, does Brown's election provide a 2008 template?

"I hadn't thought about that," says Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate majority leader. "But I do believe what we have been doing in the past, and I mean we Democrats, hasn't worked. So I would think that people should watch very closely how Sherrod really took this race and did it his way."

And how did Brown do it? By shrugging off the CW claiming he was out-of-the-mainstream and that only a certain "kind" of Democrat could win in a state like Ohio.

Sherrod Brown doesn't say "I told you so," although he might have a right to, given the things that have changed since his election.

The war in Iraq and its overwhelming unpopularity is one. And the recalls of toys and tainted pet food from China are another, suggesting that maybe Brown wasn't so far out when he warned against trading with low-wage countries with questionable safety standards.

"It should hardly have come as a surprise" when we import so much "from a country that has no real food safety, worker safety, consumer protection or wage laws," he says [...]

He does not gloat. But it is hardly lost on those with a vested interest in winning the White House in 2008 that Sherrod Brown's issues, derided by Republicans as on the fringe, may be playing better than ever in the American political mainstream [...]

"I think that you can stand up for the middle class and stand up for workers and low-income people and win," he says.

A Letter to Senator Sherrod Brown RE: Iraq Funding Bill

Fri May 25, 2007 at 06:31:53 AM PDT

Senator Brown,

Your Iraq funding vote can only be described as despicable.  How could you possibly doom our troops by allowing Bush et al. the funding to continue their ineptitude?  As long as you lay down in the face of King George, he will continue to bully you.  Are you afraid of looking like you do not support the troops?  I have news for you, supporting the troops is more than just providing funding.  It is about providing them with a plan and leadership and moral support.  What is going to change between now and September?  The plan certainly is not, the leadership certainly is not, and therefore, the morale could quite possibly suffer....

Stop the debate...Lose in '08

That should be our slogan for the next 20 months.

The following people deserve to be defeated in 2008, and here's my advice to Senator Schumer on who can defeat them;

My letter to Senator Voinovich after his "Nay" vote on S. 470

Mon Feb 05, 2007 at 08:04:40 PM PDT

Senator Voinovich:
I see that you voted "Nay" on S. 470, to my disappointment and disgust.

I find it very odd that the "War in Iraq" is not listed in your drop-down menu of subjects. Polls show that for most Americans it is their number one concern. We went to the polls in November and sent a very strong message to Washington. We want our troops out of Iraq.

A Tale of Two Senators (Pictorial)

Thu Jan 04, 2007 at 05:46:29 PM PDT

This diary is the first of several to welcome the new arrivals to the 110th Congress.  There are ten freshman Senators this session.  Nine of them are Democrats.  Only one is a Republican.

Again: 9 out of 10 freshman Senators are Democrats!!

'06 Campaign Memories #438

Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 03:47:34 PM PDT

I'm getting over my grief of losing our local election slowly. It's really therapeutic though, to look back at all the stupid mistakes Rethugs made over the election season. This one is one of my favorites. It involves the Sherrod Brown Campaign in OH-Sen.

Key Senate Race graphs: How I called all the Senate races

Thu Nov 09, 2006 at 05:13:33 AM PDT

In a series of diaries, I analyzed all the key Senate polls, using graphs and loess.  ON Monday, I made predictions.  I was off on the margin of victory in some races, but I got every winner.

Below the fold is a recap, with the results added

OH-Sen: Sherrod Brown Looks Back, Looks Forward

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 02:54:58 PM PDT

After staying up until 4:30 am blogging I rolled out of bed and hustled downtown to the Crowne Plaza Hotel this morning for a "press availability" with senator-elect Sherrod Brown (D-Avon). He appeared in a denim shirt looking a little tired but very relaxed, stepping behind a podium before a phalanx of reporters, photographers and TV cameramen. He said he had no prepared statement and invited questions.

Brown called this a very important election and said that the fact that he won in double-digits is a testament to the strength of the issues he raised in his campaign (including education, job-killing trade agreements, alternative energy, stem cell research, and economic issues affecting the middle class).

Much more after the flip ...

BREAKING -- 16 Ohio precincts to stay open to 10 pm

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 03:44:51 PM PDT

Just heard it on CNN. Sixteen precincts in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) will remain open until 10 pm, thanks to a federal judge.

OH-Sen: E-Day Report from Brown HQ

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 01:56:38 PM PDT

The polls in Ohio close in less than three hours, and here at Strickland HQ in Lorain County, we're racing through the phone bank lists. Nearly every person I've talked to cheerfully and proudly announced, "I already voted." Some even added "Straight Democrat!" It squares with reports of high turnout around the country - from Virginia according to the Kos frontpage to Chester County, PA, as reported by my mom.

Last night at Brown HQ we arrived back from our evening canvassing shift to find that we'd been sent eight pizzas by Michael J. Fox. Now that's cool.

I shouldn't stay too long - we're almost done the top-priority phone bank folders. With just a few hours to go, though, the decision is in the hands of Ohio's enthusiastic voter base.

Dirty Tricks Abound in Ohio

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 09:58:41 AM PDT

My husband (Timroff) is working Election Protection. He reports that a co-worker talked to a lone lady standing outside a voting place in Euclid Ohio, which is a democratic stronghold on the east side of Cuyahoga county--65 to 70% Democratic.

The lady stated when asked that she's a Republican, and that the Republican party gave her a sign to hold that says "Democrats for Blackwell."

There are no Democrats for Blackwell.  Ken Blackwell is the Republican candidate, and he has frought the Secretary of State's Office with scandel and backdoor dealings, the likes of which do Rove proud.

FOLLOWING THE POLLS: THE FINAL EDITION!!

Mon Nov 06, 2006 at 05:20:16 PM PDT

Poll open in less than 12 hours, and this marks the final edition of FTP. Has it only been about six weeks? Good lord, it seemed like a second job on some days, including today (of course) as we see the final push of polls before the "only poll that matters"...tomorrow.

Cautionary note--I am sure I have missed a few. Sorry. Today was a work day, and I also had a few other obligations today. I got what I could, which is two national polls and over 50 individual races.

Follow me below the fold for the last of it.....

CT-SEN: Polimetrix says Joe 48, Ned 44 + other races

Mon Nov 06, 2006 at 01:00:11 PM PDT

I don't see that anyone has reported this yet. It's showing at the top of recent polls at Pollster.com...

Polimetrix, as part of the Cooperative Congressional Election Study, which brings together prominent political science researchers from around the country to do a massive national poll just before the election, has a raft of results just released. But I thought the one everyone most wants to hear is this one {pdf}:

Lieberman 48
Lamont 44
Schlesinger 5
